This really touched me.

Glenn Beck is one of my favorite radio personalities. I think this is such a touching tribute to the prophet of the LDS church who recently passed away.

What a week...

I think I say this at the end of every week. Wow. I went to Costco yesterday with my grandma who felt the need to use all the coupons she had ripped out of the flyer, yet didn't need any of the stuff personally. We ended up with a lot of great stuff which was really nice for us, but made me laugh when I was with her. I was just going along for the ride (and to buy some eggs).

She told me something that has really made me think. She said, "even though my days aren't very interesting, I am always excited to wake up and see what is going to happen that day." Isn't that great?? 91 years old and an outlook like that. I often dread waking up. It is just the start of the routine again: shower, blowdry hair, put makeup on, put undies on J, get J dressed, make J's bed, brush J's teeth, change P's diaper, nurse P, get self dressed, feed kids breakfast, put P down for nap, eat breakfast myself. And this all happens before 9:30am. Sometimes it is just so monotonous. I don't know what I expect, it is all stuff that has to be done, but sometimes it just gets old. Anyone else feel like this?

I try to come up with fun things to do during the day that don't require me to go to Target or Costco (my two biggest money pits). I like to get out though. I get a little cabin feverish if I stay home too much. I have started taking J to storytime again now that he will actually sit still. He has really been enjoying it, especially the craft. Then, I try to let him play with friends one day, go to the grocery store one day, but that still leaves a few days in there. I will play with pics, do housestuff or fill my time with the stuff I have to do, but if I had my choice I would go to lunch a few days a week, do craft projects, read and bake.

I am not complaining about my life, I have a great life, but life is just that, life. D laughs at me when I say that. Seriously though, isn't it so true that is about the journey and even though at time it is so monotonous, it can bring so much joy and peace. My kiddos (okay, really just the two year old) can bring me to my whits end, yet I love him so much and can't imagine life without him.

We had a busy week...Tuesday I went to enrichment and to see the movie "Juno". It was an interesting movie--I loved parts and felt sad about parts. I think all in all it was one I really liked. The message was very unHollywood and for that I liked it.

Wednesday D started his woodworking class. He is really excited about it. I have so many projects for him. I told him that to complete them all he needed to get through about two per class.

Thursday was bookclub. I have a great book club and I totally look forward to it each month. Last month we read "Gracelin O'Malley". I loved it. There were parts that were hard to get through--husband beating pregnant wife and I had to put it down for a while, but since I finished it I have thought so much about how blessed I am in life. The book takes place during one of the potato famines in Ireland and with every child that starved or died or lived I could see the face of one of my children on them. I can't even imagine how difficult something like this would have been. I lived in a third world country on my mission and I am aware of the disparity between our country and others. We (I) just feel really blessed to live in this time, in these circumstances.

I forgot to mention that I started taking J to Storytime again. I quit for a while because he was so naughty while we were there and I wanted to strangle him by the time we left (usually early). He has done great the last two weeks...he sits and listens to the books, doesn't scream when I ask him to sit down and loves doing the craft. It has been really rewarding to take him.

Friday was our errand day. Since we had planned to leave town for the weekend I went to the Weight Watchers meeting that morning. I have now lost 7.5 pounds (in three weeks). Hooray! I still have about 10 to go, but some of that I know will stick with me until I finish nursing. I would love to get to 140 and then after I am done nursing work on the last five pounds. We will see. I have been very diligent about working out and really, just feeling better about myself.

We had a game night on Friday which was fun and had another fun friend get together on Saturday. It was a busy, fun weekend. I love playing games so I enjoy any opportunity to do so. I just have to work to keep my intensity down when I play.

And that brings us to today--Sunday. I woke up at 9:15am (can't believe P let me sleep that long) to a rainy day. I love the rain...not for too many days in a row, but a day of it is fun. D is good to me and always gets up with J on the weekends so that I can sleep in. I don't think he realizes how much it means to me. I love (and need) my sleep. Luckily, neither kids wakes up too early (usually between 7:30am and 8:00am). I vaguely remember the days when I could sleep in whenever I wanted...(sigh) wouldn't that be nice?

On to a new week. My parents got to Guatemala to begin their stint in the foreign service and it is strange to imagine them so far away. I am working on passports and hopefully we will visit them while they are there. Both sets of grandparents are now about 4 hours away. This makes me sad. I wish I had endless amounts of money so I could visit all the time--or atleast quarterly. I love our families.

Off to bed. I have had many late nights and it is catching up to me. I have been watching PBS Masterpiece theatres Jane Austen Series every Sunday night with my Gma and tonight I could barely stay awake during Mansfield Park. I saw it a long time ago and remembered it really differently.

Until next time...I will hopefully have some cute pics to post--I have great ideas for J's three year old pics and some of P as well.

Oh, and for all interested (all family is obligated) I am going to put a time capsule together for J's bday for him to open when he turns 18 so be thinking about what to contribute (it doesn't have to cost anything!!)

The Newlywed Game...

This is the Elder's quorum activity for which D and I have become infamous (not just famous). It has been retold countless times at group gatherings, Elder's Quorum meetings and who knows what other venues. D and I now talk about it and laugh, but at the time, I think it was the maddest D has ever been with me. Go ahead and laugh outloud while I retell it, everyone else does.

So, we were fairly new to the ward at the time. There was an Elder's Quorum party which we decided to attend. The presidency decided that for the activity we would be playing the Newlywed game. Four couples were chosen (us, of course, included). The women left the room and the guys were asked questions about us. The questions were straight forward and fairly easy. Then, they invited us back in and the women had to answer the questions how we thought the guys would have. Douglas and I were smoking everyone. I think by the end of the round we were leading the game like 140 to 30 or something ridiculous like that.

Now it was time for the guys to leave the room and the women answered questions for the men. This was also when things started going down hill. I was very thoughtful and logical when answering the questions and I thought I had done a great job and D and I would smoke everyone. Well, the guys come back in and the questions begin.

First question: You are out with your husband and another guy starts flirting with you. What animal best describes how your husband would react...a) A bear b) A chimp c) A mouse. I had thought this through well and here is what my logic told me...First, D really isn't the jealous type so I ruled out Bear. He also isn't a wimp so I ruled out mouse. All that was left was Chimp so, Chimp I choose.

WRONG...I have since been informed that you never refer to your husband as a word coming even close to resembling "chump"...and if any of you know how passionate and loud D can get you can imagine the conversation that ensued after my actual answer was given (he wasn't yelling at me by any means, but he wasn't happy with my answer either.)

I still stand by the logic used in answering said question.

Another question: What is one physical thing that you would change about your husband (really who in their right mind makes a spouse answer a question like that?) He said, his gut, I said his hair...I meant the excess amount of it, he thought I meant the loss of it.

Anyway, there were other questions which I guess we have blocked out of our minds, but needless to say, we came in DEAD last.

Such a dumb experience but D was soooo mad at me. I couldn't even bring it up for months afterwards.

Why do I share this, because I think it is moments like this and the ability to survive them that make marriage interesting. Luckily D and I really don't fight much, but I am so glad that we decided early on that we were sticking together no matter what...we don't joke, threated or even discuss the option. It was one of the best decisions we made together.

I don't think that game will ever be played again at a ward function by anyone that attended or has heard of the story...and to our credit, the questions were really stupid anyway.

I have the greatest hubby!

Here are 50 odd facts about him...

1. Douglas is the 3rd of 5 kids-1st boy

2. Born in Plano, TX

3. Brown hair and hazel eyes

4. Has lived in Mississippi , but was raised in Marietta, Georgia

5. Doesn't have much of a southern accent thanks to his mother who is from ID, but does say the word oil or boil like a southerner. I think it is really cute.

6. Received a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from BYU

7. Went to SUU after that and received an Associate's Degree in Construction Management

8. Is the Southern Utah Manager for Hughes General Contractors

9. LOVES his job

10. Drove a Ram Charger at the end of high school and at BYU. It made the worst noise whenever you would turn a corner. We finally sold it a year after we got married for $600 (we thought we were rich with that much).

11. Played football at BYU--fullback if I remember correctly

12. Says he wasn't very good at BYU and quit playing after two years so that he could hike more (I think anyone that plays college ball must be pretty good!)

13. Was MVP numerous times during his high school football career.

14. Wrestled and ran track in high school as well.

15. Took second in state in wrestling and only person to letter 12 times.

16. Isn't built at all like a long jumper

17. Is not a sports spectator--if he is not playing, he is definitely not watching. I bet he couldn't tell you who played in the Super Bowl this past year.

18. LOVES to hike and canyoneer.

19. Is a repelling pro. When we met I thought he was probably reckless, but he is one of the safest and most knowledgeable canyoneerers I know. He won't do stupid stuff and knows how to get out of any pickle. He is definitely the one to go with if you are new to repelling.

20. Has a red beard

21. Wore a beard in high school (?) and his freshman year at BYU (had a beard card)

22. Empties all garbage cans and takes out the garbage every Sunday night.

23. The first time he went out of the country was to Italy for 72 hours about six months after we married...spontaneous trip!

24. Loves to read, especially spy novels.

25. Wasn't much of a sweets eater until he met me.

26. LOVES sandwiches (one of my least fav. things)

27. Loves left over cafe rio salad

30. Is a great Dad and Jackson adores him.

31. Is not a great yard worker...I am happy just to get the lawns mowed.

32. Favorite color is navy blue.

33. Never flossed until about 4 months ago.

34. Never gets cavities (no fair!!)

35. Dated a lot at BYU (probably one of the few). He actually asked girls out just to get to know them. If he didn't we would never have gone out or got married.

36. Loves peanut butter and puts it on pancakes in place of syrup.

37. Served a mission in Alabama.

38. Is a horrible speller.

39. Never cracked his books in college. He would sit in the front row, take notes and get good grades (I never liked people like that!)

40. Worked as a psychiatric tech for a wilderness rehab program for youth. Loved it.

41. Is an expert survivalist.

42. Super into food storage which is why under every bed in the house is filled with it.

43. Great, creative cook. He will clean out the fridge and it even tastes good!

44. Loves to camp and backpack.

47. People always like D.

48. Very smart about many different things (and that is not just me saying it because I am his wife!)

49. Will watch ANY movie that I pick out.

Moments like this melt my heart.

Jackson loves to feed P and they just stare at each other while he does. It is too cute!

My good friend Jen.

Jen and Daniel

Jen with the "twins"
such pretty blue eyes!

my little thumb sucker
mr. J taking a break from swinging.

Happy little girl. Isn't that the cutest gummy smile??

I took the kids to Vegas yesterday to visit one of my old college roommates. It was so great to catch up with her (she lives in NYC, but was visiting her family in Vegas). Her little boy was born the same day as P and he is a doll. Don't you love his huge blue eyes??

Christmas pics

Grams Doty joined us for breakfast and opening gifts. Our typical Christmas breakfast consists of "Special Breakfast" and Butterscotch Rolls. Mmmmmmm Paigie sporting a sweet "do" and playing with her Christmas toy.
J got some fun new books from nana and papa that have stickers in the back. I find stickers everywhere.
Happy little jumper.
Looking for more loot.
Mr. Claus.

Making christmas cookies for Santa.
Can't waste any of that delicious (store bought) icing. yum.
Christmas morning on the pj's the elves brought. Just noticed J is grabbing his crotch. gotta love little boys.

All ready for Christmas sunday. Kinda a lame picture of D and J, but Paige looks cute sucking her thumb.

more cookie decorating. I sort of hate making sugar cookies. After rolling out one batch I want to throw away the rest. I was righteous this year and made them all. Of course they didn't get eaten and I ended up throwing a bunch out. ce la vi (is that how you spell it?)
jackson really got into the sprinkling part.

These two love each other. It makes me so happy that they love each other so much. I hope it lasts.

Doesn't she look cute? I HATED this dress. Yes, it was really cute, but I felt like there was touille EVERYWHERE and it was scratchy. I bundled her up in a blanket most of church so I didn't have to deal with it.
When did J become a little boy. He is so not a toddler anymore. It makes me sad. Don't you like his banged up forehead.

yes, i am a firm believer of the phrase "better late than never."

jacksonism

I have to post this before I forget and he doesn't say it anymore, because really, it is the cutest thing.

Jackson always says, "oops-ee-days" whenever appropriate.

jeans shopping

really, need I say more? I despise it. There was a time when I fit in to everything, but seeing how my body has "morphed" into some unidentifiable post two baby thing, buying jeans has become my greatest chore.

and what is the deal with boot cut jeans. It seems that all jeans are boot cut. I don't understand the idea of big thighs, skinny knees, and big calves. People really think that is attractive?

or maybe I am so far from being "in style" these days that I couldn't pick something stylish out if my life depended on it.

and there is just something inside of me that will not let me pay $100 for a pair of jeans...maybe it is due to my knowledge of the aforementioned lack of style.

whatever the case may be, I have scoured the St. George market (didn't take too long to do that), ordered every style and color of Gap jeans (long and lean do work pretty well, but I am looking for something different than what I already have) and finally settled on a pair of Target jeans. I really have never clothes shopped at Target, but I may be converted.

please just pray that these jeans last until next year because I don't think I can jeans shop again anytime soon.

that kids just cracks me up...

Heard at breakfast this morning:

"God gave us everything...
bananas,
lightswitches,
windows,
trampoline,

no, santa gave me that,

garbage cans,
basketball hoops."

Talk about being thankful for the small and simple things.

another day in the life...

so, really I shouldn't be sitting here blogging, but I am. I don't know if it is a way to check out and ignore that, no, Jackson is still not asleep for naptime, yes, my kitchen does look like a bomb went off in it (although luckily not due to dirty dishes, just piles of paper) and no, I still can't eat that oreo cookie that just has way too many points in it. Whatever the reason, here I am again to update on my sometimes tedious, but always exciting life as a mother.

I am not typically much of a dieter. I guess when you are young and weigh what you want you have no need to be, but when I went to the dr. last week and found that I weighed more than I did when I left the hospital after having Paige, I decided it was time to do something. Unfortunately I lose very little weight when nursing, but just the same, I weight more?!? I decided to join Weight Watchers because you know you can eat whatever you want with weight watchers, right? Sure, you can have that piece of chocolate cake, just don't plan on eating anything else the rest of the day. It was a painful first few days, but I have now accepted that I am committed to this and didn't die of starvation either. Actually, I recognize that it will be good for me to gain control again. I am not too careful with what I eat when I am prego, so it is hard to get back into the mindset that I do need to be a little more controlled about how I eat. I am also making wiser choices about what I eat--I do realize that 8 chocolate cookies are not a healthy lunch. I will do this for the 11 weeks I signed up for and then see from there what I want to do. I am also working out regularly so I am very hopeful. I like food too much to ever commit enough to being model skinny, but I would like to fit in my jeans again and really, the muffin top can go.

I transitioned all my 2007 files to a box yesterday and printed new labels, labeled and sorted all my files for 2008. I am ready for the year--come what may! Now onto tackling the stack of bills sitting in a pile. Hmmm, always something fun to do.

And, I am through most of my wash and miraculously it is also folded. Let's see if we can get it in drawers anytime soon. After a week with baskets in the hall I finally asked D if he would put his laundry away. He said "sure, where is it." I just shake my head sometimes. I told him the baskets were in the hallway and he said, "oh, I just see a laundry basket as an obstacle to get over." nice. Men are so brilliant sometimes :).

Not to diss on my hubby, I just thought it was a funny anecdote. He is actually great around the house and with the kids, I really can't complain...most of the time :).

Jackson is just a happy little boy, full of endless amounts of energy and learning too fast. He amazes me sometimes. Not to brag about my child, but he is a smart little cookie. I can tell him a word, ask what letter it starts with and he can tell me. He even knew pneumonia started with p. Crazy. Just kidding.

Paige is such a delightful little girl. She is a rolling champ now and sleeps great (7pm to 8am). She is content watching her brother play and making raspberries with her mouth. She loves to look at herself in the mirror and feeding time consists of her sucking, pulling off, looking at herself in the mirror, laughing, then starting over. It is a long process and I don't think she even gets much milk in the process. That gummy smile cracks me up though.

Well, I guess I will get some housework done. If I have to.

My happy little girl...

don't you love the spit up chunk on her chin and spit up on her shirt!!

Wednesday, January 02, 2008

Wow, a new year, when did that happen? I am actually quite excited at all the things this year may hold. It will bring a lot of firsts for miss P, Jackson will be three, and D and I will both turn 30. Crazy. It should be fun. I actually set some goals for the year, which unfortunately is unusual for me. Here they are...not too many, but hopefully reasonable enough that I can actually do them.

1. Work out three times a week. (Hopefully more, but as I said, I don't like to fail :)) I would LOVE, LOVE to get down to at least my pre-Paigie weight. I will give myself a while to do so after I finish nursing, because heaven knows I don't lose weight while I am doing that. (Nursing is a sacrifice--seriously. I am glad I do it, but it is always nice when I am done too...I get myself back.) Okay, little tangent.

2. Start "studying" the scriptures again. After my mission I thought it would never be an issue...why can't everyone find time to have meaningful, thought provoking scripture study?? Then I had kids. Enough said. I really want to make this part of my life again. I need it. I need to feel like I am doing the things I need to. For blessings, yes, but also for my own personal fulfillment (also, a blessing--I guess.) Anyway, this is the second thing I am going to do (see my positive thinking at work?)

3. Really focus on improving my photography. I wish there were more classes available, but alas, I live in a small(ish) town and there really is nuttin. I want to read books and more importantly spend more time practicing. For me trial and error has been the best way to learn. I especially want to focus on lighting.

4. Be more positive and less critical of myself and others. This goal is a little more ambiguous, I guess. I come from a somewhat critical family and I think that it can be good because it helps, you always set high expectations and work hard to achieve them. HOWEVER, I think it is mainly destructive because I can never live up to my own expectations nor can others. I really want to do this mainly for my kids. I want them to be happy and positive--more like their dad (who sadly I have rubbed off on a little too much). Any suggestions on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

There they are. Hopefully I won't forget about them by next week.

Christmas was great at the Shaw house. It was just us (Grandma came for breakfast and to watch us open gifts). Jackson was excited and totally content with all his goodies. In fact, he spent the rest of the week enjoying them. Didn't ask for a movie once. It was great. It has continued into this week, but without quite as much novelty. I felt good because I really felt like we didn't go overboard which was my main goal. He {insert HUGE heart} his trampoline. He wants to jump all the time. Santa didn't even swear when he assembled it (at least not that I heard). It was FREEZING on Christmas eve so I am impressed that he got it done. A good BYU friend was here for Christmas with his in-laws and he came over and helped which was nice.

Christmas morning was a little disappointing for J when he woke up. We told him Santa had come and he wanted to go see him. We explained that Santa had left and his face immediately got sad. He thought that when we said Santa was coming that he was coming to hang out with us. He got over it once he got on his trampoline.

J and D really made out like bandits...J got a Thomas duplo set which he really has fun with. He has really enjoyed building with his duplos lately (legos for little kids). I think we will get some more sets for his birthday. I like sets that I can add to and that keep him busy. He also got a Buzz Lightyear with which he has been completely enamored. He always yells, "to infinity and beyond" when he runs down the driveway to Grams house. He also got a Leapfrog computer and some books from Nana and Papa, some Play-do (which much to my chagrin has already been intermixed--hate that) and a Bob the Builder movie from Gma Dee and Gpa George and a few other assorted stocking goodies from us. Oh yeah, and some more play-do and Hungry Hungry hippos from aunts and uncles. He was a happy camper.

D got his road bike and tons of RB gear. I think he thinks the living room is going to be a permanent house for the bike :). He loves it. He went on his first official ride yesterday and was in heaven. He has a good suga' mama.

Now a little year in review:

Of course Paigie was the most exciting event of the year and although she has changed immensely in her seven months of life (can you believe she is already seven months??) her changes have mostly been sitting, finally rolling over, squealing, eating baby food, sleeping through the night and such new baby feats.

Here are some of J's highlights as of today:
Favorite breakfast--"hootnenany" (hootenany or german) pancake
Favorite movie--depends on the day really, but I would have to say anything Vege tale (quite witty movies, actually)
Favorite treat--hershey kisses (what he just told me) or cookie dough
Favorite toys--Bob the Builder, Duplos, Play-do, Books, Buzz Lightyear
Favorite books--Dr. Seuss, Disney Storybooks
Favorite songs--Popcorn, Leafy Tree Tops, Bob the Builder
Favorite color--usually pink, although he is saying blue today
Best friend--Marissa

I finally feel like Jackson has turned a corner on driving me insane. Seriously, for a while there I was ready to ship him to some band of gypsies. The last few weeks, however, I feel like he has matured (a crazy word for an almost three year old), but really he understands consequences a little more which has resulted in better decisions and he has played by himself more. Can't quite explain it, but all I know is that is has been much more pleasurable to be his mother.

Hmmm, what else, I guess really I should go get something done around here. Hope all of my followers :) had a great Christmas and that this year is good to you.

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Prayers of an almost three year old.

Some of the things Jackson can be heard blessing:

Santa
Jesus (he needs lots of blessings :))
That mason and marissa will be nice so that they can get presents and candy from santa
That mom and dad won't fight (okay, we really don't fight much and not in front of him if we do)
That he (Jackson) won't tell mom to "just go somewhere" (his exact words)
The gingerbread house
Gingie (the gingerbread man that goes with the house)
His Toys
The pirates who do nothing (??)
The pirate ship

I know I still have a little baby weight to lose, but come on...

I enjoy having Jackson tell his Dad various things...I think mainly because he talks so cute. I get him to say things like, "you're insane in the membrane," and "you're a goof ball galore" (pronounced gawore by J). Today Douglas retaliated and told J to tell me that I was an animal. Jackson proceeded to tell me that I am an animal. I asked him what kind of animal and without skipping a beat he said, "a big hippo."

A regular hippo wasn't large enough I guess.
